A Regional Celebration, illuminate the trace from Hattiesburg to Prentiss
Picture this: on the darkest day of the year, when the Winter Solstice casts its enchanting shadows, the Longleaf Trace comes alive with the soft glow of thousands of luminarias. This regional event spans five locations, weaving through the picturesque landscapes of Prentiss Gateway Park, HBCU Prentiss Institute’s Rosenwald School, Carson Station, Bassfield Station, and Sumrall Station. These luminous beacons serve four communities across three towns and two counties, all united under one common goal – Safety, Security, & Lighting on the Longleaf Trace.
The Longleaf Trace, a 44-mile Rails to Trails corridor from Hattiesburg to Prentiss, stands as a testament to the commitment of these communities to preserve their natural treasures. The funds raised from luminaria sales in each community stay within that community, nurturing specific goals and aspirations. Sponsorships and T-shirt profits contribute to the creation of the Longleaf Trace App, a technological marvel benefiting the entire stretch from start to finish.

The Winter Solstice: A Celebration of Light in Darkness
The Winter Solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year, holds a profound significance. As the sun dips to its lowest point, communities along the Longleaf Trace come alive with the spirit of the season. A radiant display of luminarias lights up the night, each one telling a unique story and casting a warm, welcoming glow.
Neighbors gather, sharing laughter and warmth around the flickering lights. The luminarias, like tiny beacons of hope, weave together tales of heritage and unity, making the darkest night of the year a celebration of light, community, and the magic of togetherness.
Economic & Community Development: Lighting the Way Forward
Beyond the enchanting display, "Light Up the Trace" embodies the principles of economic and community development. By ensuring a safe environment for all Trace travelers, we foster community involvement and drive increased traffic, which translates into heightened commerce for local businesses. A well-lit Trace not only attracts visitors but also injects tourism dollars into the local economy, benefiting everyone in our community.
The Power of Donations: Lighting Up Lives and Trails
In 2021, the event raised over $2,500 across three locations, showcasing the remarkable generosity of the community. Expanding to five locations in 2022, including a collaboration with the Sumrall Main Street Association, the event saw a significant increase, raising a staggering $6,000. Looking ahead, the future holds the promise of further expansion, aiming to include every community along the Longleaf Trace Corridor, extending all the way to the AMTRAK station in Hattiesburg.
Celebrating Community Spirit: A Joyous Occasion
This event is not merely about illumination; it serves as a crucial platform for socializing, reminiscing, and engaging with neighbors and friends. The collaboration between churches, schools, and volunteers underscores the critical importance of community involvement in crafting significant and impactful events. Observing the Longleaf Trace bathed in lights evokes profound joy and wonder, fostering a vital sense of community spirit essential for the well-being and cohesion of every locality.
We ask you to mark your calendars for December 21st, the Winter Solstice, and join us as we light up the Longleaf Trace.
In the spirit of "Light Up the Trace," Jeff Davis County exemplifies how communities can unite to create something extraordinary, strengthening regional bonds. This event transcends a mere luminaria display; it stands as a testament to the power of unity and collaboration, shining brightly as a beacon of communal harmony.
